The behavior of the Paulnuts on the Mackinac ferry, noted by David, is a common consequence of pacifism and extreme libertarianism. Both think the state at war is the worst thing in the world. (Extreme libertarians think the state doing most everything else is also bad.) Most—maybe all—libertarians acknowledge a right to self defense. But in the modern world this cannot be done by militias. It requires a military industrial complex, with all the attendant consequences. Some libertarians accept this fact (while proposing modifications). Extreme libertarians do not; therefore they support self defense only in theory.
In any actual situation, the prospect of the state at war is so monstrous that the pacifist/extreme libertarian must prettify or deny the threat, and abuse Cassandras. Thus 9/11 was an inside job, the war on terror is a project of warmongering Jews, Giuliani stole WTC gold, etc.,etc.
The honest pacifist/extreme libertarian would say, I will not fight, for any reason, at any time. If evil triumphs, so be it. It will be less evil than my fighting would have been. I at least have preserved my rightness. But that is a hard saying, hence these maneuvers.

What Brookiser is refering to is the harrasment of Rudy Giuliani on the Mackinac ferry in Michigan by Ron Paul supporters. From the Detroit Free Press
According to one eyewitness, Giuliani was beset by dozens of Paul enthusiasts as he was leaving the island, some of whom shouted taunts about 9/11, including: “9/11 was an inside job” and “Rudy, Rudy, what did you do with the gold?” -- an apparent reference to rumors about $200 million in gold alleged to have disappeared in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers.

Well, I guess I'm a wicked idiot, but I will refrain from name-calling, which seems to be the first line of attack among Ron Paul detractors. The former mayor was not attacked or threatened. Had he been, someone would have been arrested, and no one was. He received the same amount of respect from the Paul supporters as he has shown Congressman Paul -- none.

Well, when FOX tried to humiliate Ron Paul by misquoting him, asking him loaded questions, and leaving Rudy's microphone on so we could hear him gigle like a little girl, they failed, and unless you just ate up Huckabee channeling Nixon with his whole "Honor!" thing, FOX's attempt to shutout Ron Paul failed misrably. It pretty much became his mainstream coming-out party as a top tier candidate.
Then people try and pin him on the whole Mall Security guard thing, nothing happens.
Then Ron Paul has a massive rally in Chicago, about 1,500 people (I guess we "spammed" that one too?) Nope, one neocon blogger couldn't use the 'ole spammer line, so instead he resorts to referring to a group of people from all walks of life as neo-Nazis.
Then Ron Paul beats Giuliani at a Straw Poll. Rudy Giuliani accidentally stumbles onto a ferry full of something he *doesn't* have: GRASSROOTS SUPPORT! Romney's polling is in the shitter, so his last resort is pretty much to buy voters and bus them into the straw polls. So concerning the truthers, threatening Giuliani, etc. It's most likely the "one eyewitness" MADE THE GODDAMNED THING UP!
Trying to humiliate him doesn't work. Trying to call his supporters neonazis doesn't work. Do you really thing *Flat out* lying will work?
Now Ron Paul and Romney are pretty much tied in the Gallup and AP Polls, and since landline polls have become antiquated as of the new millenium, he's most likely polling ahead of Romney. He's been having numerous $100-k-a-day fundraisers, 1,000-or-more turning up at rallies across the country, he has won more straw polls than any Republican, and his "spammers" are most likely going to have raised 500,000 in about two or three days. If you don't like Ron Paul, that's absolutely fine, but don't you think that by now, it's time to dig deep, put on a little elbow grease and come up with something substantial to say? Because it's too easy for us when all the opposition can do is slander, and lie.
One idiot on the whole boat said "9/11 was an insider job," and from that he generalizes that everyone who supports Ron Paul is a nut. Brookshiser is the nut.
